## What Activepieces is

Activepieces is an open-source (MIT core) no-code automation platform that can also publish its integration pieces to AI clients as a hosted MCP server, an automation and AI-workflow platform rather than a runtime security firewall.

## Where Activepieces is strong

- SSO, SCIM and RBAC. Enterprise identity, group sync and role-based access.
- Self-host, on-prem or VPC. Run it in your own environment for data residency.
- Open source core. An open, inspectable core rather than a closed proxy.

## Where Activepieces falls short

Measured against a runtime agent data firewall. These are the gaps that matter if your priority is stopping data loss at the point of the tool call.

- Activepieces exposes MCP tools (it acts as a hosted MCP server over SSE) but does not secure agent traffic at runtime: no inline DLP, PII or secrets scanning of tool inputs and outputs, no prompt-injection or tool-poisoning defense, and no pre-execution blocking of dangerous tool calls.
- It has no device-level endpoint agent and no shadow-MCP discovery; it governs only the pieces you deploy inside Activepieces, and hosts its own MCP tools in its cloud rather than keeping your local stdio MCP servers on-device via a tunnel.
- Its controls (per-project tool enable and disable, scoped connections, human approval on high-risk actions, audit logs) are automation-platform governance over its own workflows, not a policy firewall inspecting the MCP protocol and agent CLI between an AI client and enterprise tools.
- Credit where due: the core is genuinely open source (MIT), fully self-hostable on Docker, Compose or Kubernetes Helm and air-gap capable, with enterprise SSO, SCIM, RBAC, audit logs and SIEM streaming.

Doesn't Activepieces' MCP support mean it secures my AI agents? No. Activepieces acts as an MCP server that publishes its connected apps to AI clients as callable tools. It is a tool producer, not a security layer in front of the agent, and it does not inspect, DLP-scan, or block the tool traffic flowing through an agent to other MCP servers or CLIs. That inline runtime firewall role is what SealGate fills.

Is Activepieces self-hostable and open source? Yes. The core is MIT-licensed and self-hostable on Docker, Docker Compose, or Kubernetes Helm, and is air-gap capable. Enterprise features such as SSO, SCIM, custom RBAC and audit-log or SIEM streaming are under a separate commercial license, an open-core model.
