Durable execution and background-jobs platform

# Trigger.dev vs SealGate

How Trigger.dev and SealGate compare for securing AI agents and their MCP tool calls, and where each one fits.

Last updated: September 2026

Trigger.dev. Trigger.dev is an open-source (Apache-2.0) durable-execution and background-jobs platform with a TypeScript SDK for long-running tasks, retries, queues, scheduling and human-in-the-loop, increasingly used to build and run AI agents rather than to secure them.

SealGate. A runtime agentic data firewall that blocks dangerous tool calls before they execute, scans tool traffic for data loss and prompt injection, discovers shadow MCP servers on the device, and streams a provable audit trail to your SIEM.

Bottom line: Trigger.dev is a developer platform for running durable background and agent jobs, not an agent security firewall; its self-host, SOC 2 and human-approval waitpoints govern job execution rather than what an agent sends to enterprise tools, which is SealGate's job.

## Trigger.dev vs SealGate, feature by feature

SealGate leads with the rows at the top, its clearest points of difference, then the parity rows every enterprise gateway is expected to cover.

| Capability | SealGate | Trigger.dev |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How local stdio MCP servers are handled. Whether your local MCP server stays on the device or is shipped elsewhere. | Tunnel in place (Yes) | Not an MCP gateway (No) |
| Local stdio servers stay on-device. The server keeps running on the machine, with no host-and-lift and no HTTP re-expose. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| Device-level management. An endpoint agent that discovers and governs MCP activity on the device itself. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| Interface coverage. Whether the gateway governs only the MCP protocol, or the agent CLI and LLM API too. | MCP + CLI (Yes) | Background tasks (No) |
| Runtime enforcement. Blocks a dangerous tool call before it executes, not just after the fact. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| DLP, PII and secrets scanning. Inspects tool inputs and outputs for sensitive data at runtime. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| Prompt injection and tool-poisoning defense. Detects and stops injection, tool poisoning and rug-pull attacks. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| Gateway holds the credential. The gateway issues the final call so the agent cannot bypass policy and retry. | ✓ Yes | ~ Partial |
| Shadow MCP discovery. Finds unauthorized MCP servers before they are used. | ✓ Yes | ✕ No |
| Provable per-call audit. A receipt for every call: agent, tool, policy version, result. | ✓ Yes | ~ Partial |
| SIEM integration and export. Streams audit events to Splunk, Sentinel and other SIEMs. | ✓ Yes | ~ Partial |
| SSO, SCIM and RBAC. Enterprise identity, group sync and role-based access. | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Tool-level policy. Read and write tiers, per-tool rules and human-in-the-loop approvals. | ✓ Yes | ~ Partial |
| Self-host, on-prem or VPC. Run it in your own environment for data residency. | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |

## Where SealGate is different

- Trigger.dev runs and orchestrates background and agent jobs (durable tasks, retries, queues, cron, streaming); it executes agent code rather than policing an agent's tool calls at runtime.
- It has no runtime security controls over agent tool traffic: no inline DLP, PII or secret scanning, no prompt-injection or tool-poisoning defense, no pre-execution blocking of dangerous tool calls, and no shadow-MCP discovery.
- It is not an MCP gateway and has no device-level endpoint agent; it governs whether your TypeScript task ran, not whether an agent tried to exfiltrate data through an MCP server on a laptop.
- Credit where due: the core is genuinely open source (Apache-2.0) and fully self-hostable in your own VPC via Docker Compose or Kubernetes, with SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, a HIPAA BAA and enterprise SSO and RBAC.

## Frequently asked questions

Does Trigger.dev secure what an AI agent sends to its tools? No. Trigger.dev runs the agent or task code and gives you retries, queues, observability and human approvals, but there is no inline inspection, DLP, or policy enforcement on the data flowing between an agent and enterprise tools. That runtime firewall layer is what SealGate provides.

Its waitpoints let a human approve a run, isn't that tool-call approval? It is an approval gate on a task run: the task pauses until a token is completed via SDK, React hook, or webhook. It is an orchestration primitive for pausing your own workflow, not a per-tool read or write policy or a pre-execution block on a dangerous agent tool call.

Is SealGate a good alternative to Trigger.dev? Yes. Trigger.dev is an open-source (Apache-2.0) durable-execution and background-jobs platform with a TypeScript SDK for long-running tasks, retries, queues, scheduling and human-in-the-loop, increasingly used to build and run AI agents rather than to secure them. SealGate is a runtime agentic data firewall that blocks dangerous tool calls before they execute, scans tool traffic for data loss and prompt injection, discovers shadow MCP servers on the device, and streams a provable audit trail to your SIEM. If runtime data security is the priority, SealGate is a strong alternative.

What does SealGate do that Trigger.dev does not? Trigger.dev runs and orchestrates background and agent jobs (durable tasks, retries, queues, cron, streaming); it executes agent code rather than policing an agent's tool calls at runtime.
